The performance ceiling test

The clearest decision rule: if your workload needs more than 16 vCPU or 64 GB RAM, VPS runs out of room. Everything else — even 8 vCPU / 32 GB SaaS deployments — usually runs fine on VPS Advanced ($300/mo). The other clean signal: if you need a specific RAID card, a GPU, or 10 Gbps network on your own MAC address, only dedicated can deliver that. Everything else is a cost calculation.

Is a dedicated server always faster than a VPS?

For raw compute at scale, yes — a full Xeon Gold or EPYC beats any VPS slice. But for typical web workloads that fit within 16 vCPU / 64 GB, a VPS Enterprise ($600/mo) will be indistinguishable from a mid-tier dedicated ($299/mo) except in worst-case tail latency. Benchmark before you upgrade.

Can I run VMware ESXi on a VPS?

No — a VPS is already a guest VM, nested virtualization is not enabled. If you want to run ESXi/Proxmox/Hyper-V yourself, you need a dedicated server. You can technically nest KVM inside KVM on a VPS with heavy performance loss, but it's not something we recommend or support.

How long does dedicated provisioning take?

Standard configurations are online the same business day. Custom builds (specific RAID levels, non-standard OS, GPU cards) can take 24-48 hours. VPS in comparison is under 60 seconds — that alone tips many "I need it right now" decisions toward VPS first, then upgrade later if needed.

Can I upgrade from VPS to dedicated later?
