Before you start
Three things to check first.
ICANN rules apply to every transfer — these aren't Hostiger-specific. Run through the checklist before submitting your transfer to avoid a rejected request from the registry.
If any of these fail, our team can usually help — open a ticket with your current registrar name and we'll guide you.
Domain is unlocked
Most registrars enable "registrar lock" by default to prevent unauthorized transfers. You need to disable it at your current registrar before starting.
You have the EPP / auth code
The EPP (Extensible Provisioning Protocol) code is a transfer password unique to each domain. Request it from your current registrar — they'll typically email it to your admin contact.
Domain is older than 60 days
ICANN requires domains to be at least 60 days old before they can transfer — this prevents abuse. The same rule applies after any recent registrant change.
Admin email is reachable
The registry sends a confirmation email to the domain's admin contact. If you can't access that mailbox, update WHOIS before starting the transfer.

Typically 5–7 days from the moment you approve the registry confirmation email. The actual handshake between registries can take up to 7 days; we can't speed up the registry — it's their security rule, not ours.
What is an EPP / auth code?
The EPP (Extensible Provisioning Protocol) code, also called the auth code or transfer code, is a unique password issued by your current registrar that proves you own the domain. It's required by the registry to authorize the transfer. Without it, the transfer can't even start.
Will my website or email go down during transfer?
No. Your existing nameservers, DNS records and MX entries are preserved during the entire transfer window. Your site and email keep running through the move — the only thing that changes is which registrar manages the domain.
Do I lose the time left on my current registration?
No — quite the opposite. When you transfer to Hostiger, we add a full extra year to your existing expiry date. So if your domain currently expires in 8 months, after transfer it'll expire in 1 year and 8 months. The transfer effectively pays for itself.
Why was my transfer rejected?
Common reasons: domain still locked at the old registrar, wrong EPP code, admin email not reachable, domain less than 60 days old, or the domain was registered/transferred within the last 60 days. We'll email you with the specific reason — fix it and we'll resubmit at no extra cost.
Can I transfer 100+ domains at once?
Yes. Upload a CSV with domain names and EPP codes — we process the batch and email status updates as transfers complete. Volume discounts available for resellers and agencies. Contact sales for high-volume rates.
What does it cost to transfer?
The same as one year of renewal — $19.99 for .com, $14.99 for .org, $34.99 for .io, and so on (see pricing table). That payment also covers the bonus year we add to your expiry, so you're effectively getting a free transfer plus a year of registration.
Are all TLDs transferrable?
Most gTLDs (.com, .net, .org, .io, .ai, etc.) follow standard ICANN transfer rules. Some ccTLDs (country-specific) have unique requirements — for example .tr requires registry-level approval. Check our transfer form or contact us with your specific TLD.
What if my transfer is stuck?
Open a ticket. Common causes: your old registrar is delaying release, the confirmation email went to a stale address, or there's a registry hold. Our team will trace it end-to-end and follow up with the losing registrar if needed.
Can I cancel a transfer once it's started?
Until you've approved the registry confirmation email, yes — just don't click approve. After approval, the transfer is in the registry's hands and we can't easily cancel it. If you change your mind mid-transfer, contact us immediately.
