How to migrate your VPS to Hostiger

Hostiger offers free one-click migrations from DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS Lightsail, GCP and Azure. This guide covers both automated and manual migration paths, with a rollback plan if anything goes wrong.

Estimated time: 30 minutes
Cost: from $15/mo

1

Provision the destination VPS

In the Hostiger client area, order a VPS with the same or higher specs (vCPU, RAM, disk) as your current server. Same region if possible to minimize latency change.

2

Choose one-click or manual migration

For DigitalOcean/Vultr/Linode/AWS Lightsail/GCP/Azure, use the Migrations section in the client area. Enter source-provider credentials (read-only API token is sufficient). Hostiger clones the image directly.

3

For manual migration: snapshot the source

Take a snapshot on the source provider. Download it as a raw or qcow2 image. Upload to Hostiger via the client-area Custom ISO section (Pro plan or higher required for custom uploads).

4

Boot from the migrated image

Attach the uploaded image as the primary disk on the destination VPS and reboot. The VPS will boot with the source system intact — SSH keys, users, apps, configs preserved.

5

Update DNS records

Once the destination VPS is healthy, update your DNS A/AAAA records to point at the new Hostiger IPv4/IPv6. Reduce TTL to 300 seconds a few hours before the switch to minimize downtime.

6

Run parallel for 24-48 hours

Keep the source VPS running for 24-48 hours while DNS propagates. Monitor traffic on both. Once you confirm all users are hitting Hostiger, cancel the source subscription.

7

Enable Hostiger snapshots

In the destination VPS control panel, enable daily snapshots (20% of plan price). Take an immediate manual snapshot post-migration as a rollback point.
